Diminuendo

by ~MistakenMagic

For Nana

Her room’s walls are blank
like score-less sheets.

But as she hums to herself in her sleep
the notes flutter from her lips -

a minim here and there, a congregation
of quavers spinning above her head.

Her chest steadily rises and falls in scales
yet her heartbeat jumps across the octaves.

Gently I dab the saliva from her lips –
it pulls away, a silver stave,

begging to be threaded with chords
as charms. Her hands are too heavy now

to rise from the blankets. But her fingers flutter,
searching for keys amongst the creases.

Inspired by the wonderful Lola Haskins.

I am still absolutely amazed at the response to 'Diminuendo'. Thank you SO MUCH everyone who has commented and favourited this piece - you have no idea how much I appreciate it. I'm sorry I can't reply to everyone but I promise you I have read all your comments and most have brought tears to my eyes! Thank you!

Diminuendo by ~MistakenMagic shows us what happens when a pianist can no longer play due to the diminishment of old age. (Featured by `fllnthblnk)

"Searching for keys among the creases". I think I may never forget that one. It's beautiful.

My Nana died three years ago...This reminds me of when she was in the hospital during the last two months of her life. I sang for her from when I was a little girl all the way up to the end of her life. She always thought she must have been a conductor in one of her past lives because whenever she listened to music, her hands would move of their own accord like a conductor's. She used to sing me old Irish songs in a deep, contralto voice when I was very little. She loved music and could play piano, though she didn't own one. Her death is still pretty raw for me; she was more of a mother to me than my mom in many ways, from emotional connection to the proper raising of me, so I really lost my mother, not my grandmother. Thus, this poem touches me very deeply. Brings tears, which I always consider to mean that a piece of art is well-done, so congratulations.

This is hauntingly smooth. It flows so easily. The title is amazing and the lines

"Gently I dab the saliva from her lips –
it pulls away, a silver stave,"

are very sad, and they really bring the piece alive. My poetry has been getting better and better, but I can only hope that one day I'll get this good...

PS: I play the piano too. I dread the day this will happen to me, but you showed that music runs in the blood, not the fingers. Thank you.

I love this piece but it leaves me with a bittersweet feeling because it reminds me of someone special.

Thank you for writing and posting. :)
